Pepperdine's school colors of blue and orange were decided in Pepperdine's first year of existence (1937).

"Also in the first year (President) Baxter appointed a committee to make a recommendation on school colors. He announced that students would be allowed to vote on the recommendations on November 18, 1937. The options suggested by the committee were blue and white, blue and maroon, or blue and gold. Students chose blue and orange, accepting President Baxter's suggestion to replace gold with orange, when he said that, so far as he knew, no other school has the 'blue of the Pacific and the orange of the State of California'" (Crest of a Golden Wave, 1987).
