Waves Sweep Past Saint Mary's, 3-0


 
 

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s volleyball claimed a 3-0 sweep (30-26, 30-27, 30-25) over the Saint Mary’s Gaels in a West Coast Conference match on Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.

 

With the win, the Waves improved to 18-8 (9-4 WCC) while the Gaels fell to 14-11 (6-7 WCC).

 

Game one saw each team make an early run, as the Waves jumped out to a 9-5 lead. The Gaels responded by going on an 11-2 run to claim a 16-11 lead. The Waves used a 9-4 lead to knot the match up at 20-20, and then closed out the game on a 10-6 run to claim the 30-26 win. Each team was limited offensively in the game, as the Waves hit .118, while the Gaels only managed a .025 mark. Game two was a back-and-forth affair, as the lead changed six times before the Waves tied the cost at 20-20. The Gaels went on a 5-3 run to take a 25-23 lead, but the Waves closed out the match on a 7-3 run, as they posted a 30-27 victory to take a 2-0 lead. Game three saw the Waves limit the Gaels to a .174 hitting percentage, as they claimed a 30-25 victory and a 3-0 sweep.

 

Pepperdine hit. 200 for the match while Saint Mary’s hit .147.

 

“I thought we played well tonight,” Pepperdine Coach Nina Matthies said. “I thought we felt out Saint Mary’s in the first game and we got better defensively as the match went on. I thought we stayed focused tonight and did a good job.”

 

Lecca Roberts (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury HS) had a team-high 14 kills, Cassi Chamberlain (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) notched 10 kills and hit .471 for the match, and Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) recorded 39 assists and five kills.

 

Up next, the Waves host Santa Clara on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Firestone Fieldhouse, as the Waves will celebrate Senior Day by honoring Roberts, Nina Baltimore and Chevy Crum before the match. Additionally, the Waves announced that the Tuesday, Nov. 20 match against UCLA is designated as the women’s volleyball team’s Canned Food Drive night, as fans are encouraged to donate canned goods to the St. Joseph Center in L.A. The Pepperdine women’s basketball will hold its Canned Food Drive on Nov. 28 vs. UCLA at 7 p.m. at Firestone Fieldhouse.
