Oct. 18, 2005
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball held leads early and rallied late in all three games Tuesday night but was unable to overcome the streaking UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, falling 3-0 (33-31, 30-25, 30-28), at Firestone Fieldhouse in non-conference play.
Pepperdine (10-8) received a team-leading 12 kills from freshman Julie Rubenstein and another 10 from sophomore Lecca Roberts, but was unable to find an answer for Santa Barbara's (11-7) Megan Blackshire and Bethany Johansen as each recorded 10 kills and combined for just one attack error.
Roberts led a Waves team which logged 13.0 blocks with seven, while Rubenstein turned away six Gaucho attempts, three solo. Defensively, Kekai Crabbe recorded a match-best 21 digs, with Breegan Mulligan and Melissa Mehlhorn digging 12 and 11, respectively, as the Waves held a solid 60-48 advantage on the stat sheet. UCSB committed more service errors than the Waves, but receive the timely kills and held a 53-47 advantage.
Janine Sandell ended the night with a team-high 14 kills, but committed 12 errors to hit .043. Pepperdine's Sophia Milo and Katy Daly each finished the night with nine kills.
The Waves will return to West Coast Conference play Friday night when it hosts Portland at 7 p.m. (PT) at Firestone Fieldhouse. Gonzaga will conclude Pepperdine's four-match homestand on Saturday with a 7 p.m. first serve.
