Kellie Woolever Named West Coast Conference Player of the Week

Pepperdine recognized with third-consecutive player of the week award.

MALIBU, Calif. – For the third week in a row, a member of the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors. Kellie Woolever was tabbed the award winner today, following two solid performances last week to lift the Waves to their fifth-straight win.

Pepperdine (10-5, 5-0 WCC), ranked #19 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, defeated Loyola Marymount, 3-0, on Wednesday before downing BYU, 3-1, at home on Saturday.

This is the first WCC Player of the Week award for Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS), and third for Pepperdine this season. Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) won on back-to-back occasions in the two weeks prior to today.

Woolever quarterbacked the team last week with a 12.14 assists/set average to bring her season average to a league-leading 10.86.

In the first match of the week at neighboring Loyola Marymount, the setter evenly scattered 31 assists amongst five hitters to lift the Waves to a dominating 3-0 victory. Woolever tacked down five kills herself, earned on a .571 hitting percentage.

Woolever came through in the clutch during Saturday’s home match against BYU. She had four blocks in the contest – three of which came in the final five points of the fourth set. She also had 21 digs.

The Waves took a two-set lead versus BYU, but the Cougars responded with a 25-22 win in the third to avoid the sweep.

With Pepperdine down 21-24 in the fourth, BYU gave a point back to the Waves thanks to service error. Everyone was on the edge of their seat, as two Cougar attacks were hit off the Pepperdine block back onto BYU’s side of the floor. On the third attack of the point, Jessica Jardine was denied by a tandem block, courtesy of Woolever and Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy). History repeated itself during the very next point, as Jardine was again roofed by Woolever and Cash to tie the set at 25.

After a few points were traded, the Waves put a stop to BYU’s comeback effort with another block by Woolever, who was this time assisted by Victoria Adelhelm (Ranch Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS).

In addition to her efforts on defense, Woolever dished 54 assists to help Pepperdine to a team-attack percentage of .248.

The Waves continued WCC action this week with road matches at Santa Clara and San Francisco.
