Waves Picked Fourth in WCC Preseason Coaches Poll
Aug. 25, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team was tabbed for a fourth-place finish in the West Coast Conference in the league’s annual preseason poll. Additionally, junior setter Becca Strehlow and senior middle blocker Samantha Cash were voted to the All-WCC Preseason Volleyball Team.
The Waves, who finished in a tie for fourth in the WCC standings in 2013, embark on the 2014 season under the new leadership of Troy Tanner. With five returning starters, eight total returning letterwinners and six promising newcomers, Pepperdine placed fourth on the preseason ballot with 53 points.
BYU was unanimously voted the favorite to win the WCC title in 2014 with 81 points, followed by 2013 champion San Diego with 70 points. Saint Mary’s rounded out the top-three with 61 points.
Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) earned a long laundry list of accolades in 2013, including All-WCC honorable mention, AVCA All-Pacific South Region first team and AVCA All-American honorable mention distinction. She averaged 10.25 assists/set and ranked second on the team with a 0.90 blocks average. Additionally, Strehlow earned All-American status as a part of the national-championship winning sand volleyball team.
Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) enters her senior campaign already ranked 10th in the program annals with 330 career blocks. If she keeps up the pace she is at she could rank in the top-three by the end of the season. The senior also gets it done on the offense end, increasing her output from 2.20 kills/set as a freshman to 2.29 kills/set in 2013.
Seven programs placed at least one student-athlete on the preseason All-WCC team. Pepperdine joined BYU and Saint Mary’s as the only three programs to place two student-athletes on the 10-person team.
The preseason coaches poll is based entirely on the votes of the 10 conference coaches, with no coach allowed to vote for their own team or players.
The Waves open the 2014 season this weekend, August 29-30, with the Pepperdine Asics Classics. The Waves open the tournament on Friday evening at 7 p.m. vs. South Alabama.
