MALIBU, Calif. -- The most recent issue of Dig Magazine ranks the greatest beach volleyball teams of all time, and Pepperdine women's volleyball coach Nina Matthies comes in at #2 on the women's list with former partner Linda Hanley.

The duo played in 44 events and recorded 30 wins while finishing second four times and third eight times.

Over Matthies' beach career, she won 43 titles and earned 93 podium finishes in 139 starts. She previously earned such awards and acclaim as membership in the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame and Women's Professional Volleyball Association Hall of Fame, as well as being named "one of the 20 legends in beach volleyball." In 2004, she was named to the 75th Anniversary All-Era Team by USA Volleyball.

According to Dig Magazine, the #1-ranked women's squad are the 2004 and 2008 Olympic gold medalists, Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor. The publication used a mathematical formula to rank the top 25 men's and women's beach volleyball teams of all time.

Matthies begins her 27th season as the Waves' head coach next week when Pepperdine opens up at the Colorado State Asics Classic. She needs just six wins to reach 500 in her career, having compiled a 494-294 record along with 10 West Coast Conference titles and 18 NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Waves, who return four starters plus the libero from the 2008 team that made the NCAA Tournament, were the first team listed in the "other receiving votes" category in the AVCA's 2009 preseason poll.
