MALIBU, Calif. – The anticipation for the 2011 Pepperdine women’s volleyball season just got a little greater today, with the announcement of the Top 30 Recruiting Classes by Prepvolleyball.com. The Waves, who will add six accomplished players to the roster this fall, rank #9.

The 2011 class is comprised of Michele Boskovich (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS),  Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy), Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS), Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS),  Danielle Romeo (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Lexi Weldon (Tallahassee, Fla./Chiles HS).

Not only is this class expected to make an immediate impact in competition, but they will also raise the standards in training to new levels both in the gym and in the weight room.  With more talented players pushing each other to greatness, Nina Matthies, who enters her 29th season at the helm of the program this fall, expects her team to become stronger as a unit.

“I believe all six incoming freshmen have the capabilities of coming in and helping this team in significant ways immediately,” commented Matthies. “Not only will they make a huge impact on our starting lineup, but they are going to take our entire squad to the next level.

“They are a tremendous group of athletes that are a great complement to our already-talented bunch coming back. We are very excited to get them in the gym and start training for the fall.”

This is not the first time a Matthies’ recruiting class has earned high acclaim.  In 2009, Prepvolleyball.com ranked the incoming freshmen at #12.

The season prior to that, Volleyball Magazine ranked the three incoming freshmen as the eighth-best recruiting class in NCAA Division I.   Those three student-athletes were Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS), Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS).  All three enter their senior seasons in 2011 as three-year starters, and have accrued a long list of awards and accolades while competing as a Wave.

Pepperdine had the highest ranked class of any team in the West Coast Conference.  BYU, who begins its inaugural season in the WCC this fall, ranked #27, while Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Saint Mary’s all garnered an honorable mention.

The Waves open the 2011 season on Aug. 26-27, when they compete against Texas, Ole Miss and the Israeli National Team.  The hosting Longhorns’ recruiting class boasts the #1 ranking by Prepvolleyball.com this year.
