MALIBU, Calif. – Veteran head coach Nina Matthies released the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team’s 2013 schedule, and the season opens with two home tournaments on back-to-back weekends. The Waves will play 15 regular-season matches inside Firestone Fieldhouse, where they have won nearly 75-percent of their matches since the doors opened in 1975.

Pepperdine, 20-12 in 2012, opens the campaign with the Asics Classic on Aug. 30-31, bringing Delaware, Iona College and Wisconsin to Malibu. The Waves have very little experience playing the Blue Hens, Gael and Badgers, and are just a combined 2-2 against the three teams.

The following weekend, Sept. 6-7, Pepperdine welcomes UC Santa Barbara, Virginia and Colorado State to Firestone Fieldhouse for the Pepperdine Invitational.

“Being home the first two weeks of the semester is great on many fronts,” said Matthies, now in her 31st year at the helm. “With such a great new class coming in, it is advantageous to stay home. No travel means we can just focus on volleyball and class. Plus it is always exciting to get to play in front of students, faculty, friends and family to open our season.”

The Waves save perhaps their most challenging preconference tournament for last and travel to Lexington, Ky. to face Kentucky and Minnesota on Sept. 13-14. Both teams competed at the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and reached at least the second round. The Golden Gophers advanced the farthest into the tournament, reaching the regional finals before falling to Penn State.

The West Coast Conference portion of the schedule begins the following week, with home matches against Santa Clara on Sept. 19 and San Francisco on Sept. 21. The Waves pay visits to Portland and Gonzaga the following week to close out the month.

Eight matches are on tap in October with home dates on Oct. 3 (BYU), Oct. 5 (San Diego), Oct. 24 (Gonzaga) and Oct. 26 (Portland).

Pepperdine plays WCC newcomer Pacific on Oct. 10 on the road before entertaining the Tigers inside Firestone Fieldhouse on Nov. 9.

Two additional home matches are on November’s slate including Nov. 7 versus Saint Mary’s. The final home match of the regular season is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16 against Wells Fargo PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount.

The NCAA Tournament first and second rounds are set for the first weekend in December with the regional rounds to follow on Dec. 13-14 at four different sites. The 2013 NCAA Tournament semifinals and finals will take place on Dec. 19 and 21 in Seattle, Wash.

A record six WCC schools were admitted into the NCAA Tournament field last season including BYU, San Diego, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount and the Waves.

The Waves return nearly all of their starters from 2012, including AVCA All-American third team selection Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and honorable mention Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois). Five newcomers are also expected to don the blue and orange next fall.
