MALIBU, Calif. – The 2014 Pepperdine women’s volleyball schedule has been released, unveiling what is in store for head coach Troy Tanner’s inaugural season with the Waves. Pepperdine will once again host the annual Asics Classic to open the season on August 29-30.

The Waves will play 12 regular-season matches inside Firestone Fieldhouse this year, where the program has won nearly 75-percent of their contests since the building opened its doors in 1975.

To start the season, Pepperdine welcomes in South Alabama, Nevada and Oral Roberts during the last weekend of August for the Asics Classic. The Waves will square off against the Jaguars for the first time in program history to begin the 2014 campaign on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Pepperdine plays the Wolf Pack at 10 a.m. and the Golden Eagles to conclude the tournament at 7 p.m.

The following weekend, the Waves remain in Southern California for the UC Irvine Invitational on Sept. 5-6. In addition to the hosting Anteaters, Pepperdine will also face Idaho and Utah State inside the Bren Events Center.

The Waves’ first out-of-state road trip promises to be a challenging one with the Bluejay Invitational on Sept. 12-13 in Omaha, Neb. Pepperdine opens the weekend against tournament host Creighton, who reached the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, the Waves contend with defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Wichita State and Bowling Green.

Pepperdine concludes the pre-conference tournament portion of the season at the Arizona State Invitational on Sept. 19-20. The Waves will face the hosting Wildcats, along with Colorado State and North Carolina Central. Both ASU and CSU reached the NCAA Tournament last season, with the Rams wrapping the year with an impressive 28-2 record.

The West Coast Conference portion of the schedule begins the following week, with road matches at Saint Mary’s on Sept. 25 and Pacific on Sept. 27. The Waves’ WCC home opener is set for Tuesday, Sept. 30 against BYU at 7 p.m. The Cougars were one of two league opponents who reached the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals in 2013.

Eight matches are on tap in October with home dates on Oct. 11 (Loyola Marymount), Oct. 16 (Santa Clara), Oct. 18 (San Francisco) and Oct. 30 (Portland).

November opens with Gonzaga at home on Saturday, Nov. 1. After back-to-back weeks on the road, the Waves conclude the regular season with a three-match home stand. Pepperdine faces Pacific (Nov. 20) and Saint Mary’s (Nov. 22) before fitting in a final match against San Diego on Tuesday, Nov. 25, just before the Thanksgiving holiday. The Toreros are the defending WCC Champions and reached the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals last season.

The Waves return a strong core nucleus of players from last season, including AVCA All-American honorable mention Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA), All-WCC first team pick Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy), All-WCC honorable mention Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and WCC All-Freshman Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS).
