MALIBU, Calif. – The #14-ranked Pepperdine women’s volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 sweep over Loyola Marymount inside Firestone Fieldhouse to improve to a perfect 13-0 in the West Coast Conference. Lilla Frederick carried the torch tonight for the Waves with 17 kills and 11 digs.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-19, 25-21.

Overall, Pepperdine improves to 19-5 heading into the final four matches of the regular season. At 13-0 in the conference the Waves hold a three game lead over San Diego and with it, at least a share of the league title. One more win would give Pepperdine the WCC title outright – its first since the 2003 season.

Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) captured her 15th double-double of the season with her 17 kills and 11 digs.

Fellow seniors Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) and Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) also delivered sound performances. Hill tacked down 12 kills, while Robinson collected 16 digs.

Sophomore setter Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) dished 34 assists in addition to 16 digs and four blocks.

Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) came up huge for Pepperdine at the net tonight, with six total blocks. In WCC play, the freshman averages a league-best 1.40 blocks/set.

LMU (14-13, 7-7 WCC) was led by Jasmine Rankins with 11 kills and Betsi Metter, who paced the match with 20 digs.

The Waves took early control of the opening set, and forced the Lions to spend its second timeout after building an 18-14 lead. The momentum began to swing in Loyola Marymount’s favor, however, as they fought back within two points at 23-21.

Frederick nailed down a kill – her ninth of the frame – off an assist by Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) to give her team set point. The Lions went on a 3-0 run to tie it at 24, but back-to-back blocks put the first set in the books for the Waves.

Pepperdine led from start to finish in the second stanza, thanks in part to Frederick’s five kills and high-velocity serving. The Lions utilized 11 different players in their lineup, but were unable to muster any offensive rhythm and hit just a .025 attack percentage in the stanza. Frederick scored the final two points to give the Waves a 25-19 win and a 2-0 overall lead heading into the locker room.

Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and Hill took over in the third set, combining for nine kills to lead Pepperdine. The Waves once again claimed an early advantage, but LMU threatened a comeback late in the set. Up match point, 24-18, the Lions erased three points before Frederick drilled a ball to tally point #25 for Pepperdine and seal the victory.

Messing finished the night with eight kills and three blocks, while Adelhelm added three kills and four blocks.

Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS) bolstered the defense with 10 digs.

With the win, the volleyball team added a point for Pepperdine in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup standings. The Waves hold a 5.5-2.0 lead for the 2011-12 season.

The Waves conclude this week with a road contest at Saint Mary’s on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. The following week, Pepperdine celebrates Senior Day on Thursday, Nov. 17 when they host San Francisco. League plays wraps up with a match at San Diego on Nov. 19, while a final nonconference tangle is scheduled for Nov. 22 versus Air Force.
