SAN DIEGOKatie Messing led the match with 12 kills but the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team was unable to overcome a powerful #8-ranked San Diego squad. The Toreros topped the Waves in three sets, 25-19, 30-28, 25-16.

Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) nailed down 12 kills on 28 attempts. Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) followed with eight kills and eight digs, while Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) turned in 31 assists and four blocks.

Overall, the Waves (11-9, 5-7 WCC) hit at a respectable .229 (38 kills-14 errors-105 attempts) clip but the Toreros overpowered that with a .300 (53-17-120) hitting percentage.

Katie Hoekman matched Messing’s 12 kills and Alaysia Brown finished the night with 10 put aways to help lift USD to 18-3 on the season, including a 10-2 tally in conference play.

Monique Domme (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) came off the bench and contributed a season-high three aces.

Leading the defense was Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS) with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

Torero libero C’era Oliveira led all players with 20 digs.

After relinquishing set one 25-19, the Waves played point-for-point with San Diego in set two. A 6-11 deficit was erased by a 4-1 run to bring Pepperdine back within two. Although the Toreros got the sideout after a timeout, Domme stepped up to the service line and dished back-to-back aces to knot the score at 14-all.

Neither team was able to pull away by more than one until Pepperdine climbed ahead 20-18. Although USD tied the score, the Waves pushed forward once again 22-20. A 4-1 Torero run gave the home squad set point, but Strehlow knocked down the kill to keep the Waves alive.

A block by Brooke Honeycutt (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) and Larsen gave Pepperdine its first set point, but the Waves were unable to capitalize. San Diego went ahead set point three more times before finally securing the stanza on set point No. 5, 30-28.

Down 0-2 overall, the Waves were unable to rebound from the hard-fought loss in the second and succumbed to a 25-16 defeat in set three.

Pepperdine continues the tough week on the road with a Saturday afternoon match vs. #21 BYU. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PT) and can be watched live on BYUtv.
