Oct. 20, 2012
SPOKANE, Wash. – Led by double-digit kill performances from Jazmine Orozco and Taylor Racich, the #23 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team swept Gonzaga in straight sets, 25-15, 25-12, 25-17. The Waves are now 16-7 overall and sit in fifth place in the West Coast Conference standings with a 5-4 record.
Pepperdine is still half a game behind Santa Clara, who improved to 5-3 after the Broncos saved two match points and defeated BYU 16-14 in the fifth set. Saint Mary’s extended its lead over the Waves to one game after upsetting San Diego in five sets. The Toreros and Cougars still sit on top of WCC standings with records of 9-1 and 7-2, respectively.
The Waves improved upon their season-high hitting percentage for the second time in two matches, and registered a .494 (46 kills-6 errors-81 attempts) clip against the Bulldogs. Gonzaga was held to a .054 (27-22-93) success rate.
Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) tallied a team-best 12 kills after taking just 24 attempts, and picked up 10 digs. The junior was also credited with a pair of service aces and three blocks for a total of 15.5 points.
Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) followed with 11 kills earned on a .529 (11-2-17) clip.
Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) contributed on both the offensive and defensive end with six kills and five blocks.
Kelly Larsen (La Jolla, Calif./Christian HS) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) protected the court with 10 digs apiece, while Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS) collected nine.
The Waves maintained their focus from start to finish, and with the exception of the opening point of the second set, never trailed in the match.
Tied at nine in the opening stanza, the Waves scored four unanswered points to take full control of the lead. Although the Zags got back within two points at 14-12, Pepperdine strung together an 8-0 run to surge ahead, 22-12. After Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) put point No. 23 on the board, Racich disposed to two kills to put the set away 25-15.
Racich and Messing both notched four kills in the frame.
Pepperdine scored nine of the first 10 points to take an insurmountable lead in the set two. The Waves’ defense did a sound job at keeping the Bulldogs’ offense at bay, forcing Gonzaga to commit 11 attack errors. With a game-ending kill courtesy of Adelhelm, the Waves won 25-12 and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Orozco lit it up in the third game, terminating seven kills on 10 swings to pace the Waves. Alyssa Mason (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) started in the final set and added five put aways to help put the final set away 25-17.
Woolever finished the day with 42 assists to bring her week’s average to 13.17 assists/set.
The Waves return to Firestone Fieldhouse next week when they will host Loyola Marymount on Thursday, Oct. 25. The match will not only count for points in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup standings, but it will serve as the team’s annual Dig Pink match in recognition of breast cancer awareness month.
