LOS ANGELES – The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team was unable to overcome a scrappy, free swinging Loyola Marymount squad, and lost 3-0 on Thursday evening inside Gersten Pavilion. Despite the loss, Samantha Cash paced the Waves with a team-high 10 kills.

With the 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 loss, Pepperdine falls to 9-8 and 3-6 in the West Coast Conference.

Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) led the Waves’ effort with 10 kills while hitting .529 (10 kills-1 error-17 attempts). The middle blocker also led the match with four blocks.

The Lions (9-9, 4-5 WCC) controlled the overall tempo of the match, hitting .248 (51-20-125) compared the Pepperdine’s .178 (33-15-101) clip.

Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS), in her first start at setter since August, dished 18 assists while picking up nine digs.

Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) led all Pepperdine defenders with 11 digs.

Kathleen Luft and Felicia Arriola accounted for the majority of the Lions’ offense with a combined 30 kills. Betsi Metter frustrated Pepperdine hitters with 15 digs.

The Waves were hindered by a rocky start, and despite a late 6-2 run, LMU was able to put set one away 25-19.

The Lions’ scrappy defense prevented Pepperdine from quickly putting the ball away in set two, but the Waves were able to capitalize during the marathon points. Although the two squads traded the lead several times, Loyola Marymount clawed its way ahead 22-20. Down 24-22, Emma Fuzie (Carmel, Calif./Carmel HS) was left wide open and the freshman easily put away the kill to eliminate one set point. The comeback was short lived however, as Arriola terminated a ball to secure the frame 25-23.

Despite the set-back, Cash went errorless 5-for-7 on the attack in set two. As a team, Pepperdine hit an impressive .312 (14-4-32).

Loyola Marymount once again came out strong to open the third stanza, forcing the Waves to call timeout at 10-5 and again at 14-7. Pepperdine was never able to find its rhythm and bowed out 25-19.

Pepperdine hosts the annual “Dig Pink” match, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, next week Thursday, Oct. 24 against Gonzaga. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear pink. Anyone unable to make it to Malibu for the match can watch live and for free via WaveCasts.
