Gaels Deal Waves a 3-0 Loss
Oct. 12, 2013
MORAGA, Calif. - Samantha Cash put away a team-high 14 kills while hitting .520, but the Pepperdine women's volleyball team could not get past the tough serving game of Saint Mary's. The Gaels earned the 3-0 victory behind set scores of 25-18, 25-23, 27-25.
The Waves, now 9-7 on the season and 3-5 in West Coast Conference play, held a 47-44 advantage in kills and a 10-8 edge in blocks. Saint Mary's countered with eight aces while going a perfect 64-for-64 on serve receive. The Gaels improved to 10-5 overall with the win, including a second-place 6-1 in the league.
Cash, known for her defensive prowess at the net, made her offensive presence known today with 14 kills. She committed just one error in her 25 swings for a .520 clip. She also added three blocks to bring her season average to 1.35 - a stat which ranks in the top-25 of all NCAA Division I players.
Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) added 10 kills for the Waves, and set a new career best with a match-leading seven blocks.
Two players reached double figures in digs, including Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) with 11 and 10, respectively. Strehlow also dished 28 assists and set the offense to a .220 (47 kills-20 errors-123 attempts) team hitting percentage.
Jordan Shaw paced SMC with 17 kills, while both Dalas Dodd and Kristina Graven added three aces each.
Saint Mary's came out of the gates strong and won the first frame 25-18. Pepperdine began to find its rhythm in set two and opened the stanza on a 7-2 run. Although the Gaels fought back and narrowed the deficit, the Waves still held onto a lead late, 20-18. SMC, trailing 21-22, continued to serve tough down the stretch and pieced together a 3-0 run to take set point. Although Pepperdine was able to side out and come back within one, 24-23, an untimely service error put point No. 25 on the board for the home team.
Set three looked much like the second, with the Waves jumping out to a sizable lead, only to see the Gaels storm back. Down 22-24, Pepperdine erased two match points to knot the frame at 24-all, but SMC was able to push forward and win 27-25 to secure the sweep.
The Waves return to action next week Thursday, Oct. 17 to face local rival Loyola Marymount on the road. The Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle is slated to start at 7 p.m. Fans unable to make it out for the match can watch the online broadcast here.
