Colorado State Stuns Pepperdine at Rams Volleyball Classic
Sept. 7, 2012
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Despite a match-high 13 kills from Jazmine Orozco, the #12 Pepperdine women's volleyball team was unable to issue Colorado State its first home loss of the season, and fell 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 to open the Rams Volleyball Classic.
The Waves fall to 4-2 on the season, while the Rams improve to 5-3 - including a perfect 5-0 mark inside Moby Arena.
Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) led Pepperdine in kills for the second-straight match, sending home 13 put aways earned on a .360 hitting percentage. She helped the Waves' cause with eight digs and two blocks.
Alyssa Mason (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) came off the bench in set two and finished the night with eight kills hitting .583.
Colorado State controlled the offensive tempo with a .306 hitting percentage (41 kills-11 errors-98 attempts) compared to Pepperdine's .266 (47-18-109) success rate.
The Rams also won the battle at the service line, holding a 5-2 advantage in aces.
Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS) led all defenders with 10 digs.
The Waves struggled to get their offense rolling in the opening frame and fell behind 7-10. Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) sparked a run with an ace to even the score at 10, but CSU took the lead back after a Pepperdine attack error. Although the Waves fought diligently to stay in the set, the Rams won 25-22.
Despite the setback, Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) showed off her offensive prowess with five kills hitting .300. Orozco followed with four kills on nine errorless attacks for a .444 clip.
The momentum carried over in the second set, and Colorado State jumped out to a 7-4 lead. The Waves responded with a 5-0 run to tip the scales in their favor, but would never extend their lead to greater than two points. Although Pepperdine held the advantage, 21-19 following a Mason kill, the Rams closed out strong and went on a 6-2 run to edge the Waves out of the second set 25-23.
Mason finished the set a perfect 3-for-3 on the attack.
The third set looked much the same, as the Rams jumped to an early lead only to see Pepperdine fight back and regain the top spot. Tied at 14, Colorado State scored on back-to-back plays and never relinquished the lead the duration of the match. Deedra Ross sealed the deal for CSU with a kill to clinch the set and the match 25-21.
The Waves look to rebound tomorrow, beginning with a 10 a.m. (PT) match against New Mexico State and concluding with a 4 p.m. contest against FIU. The Aggies swept the Golden Panthers in three sets to open action at the Rams Volleyball Classic.
