DAYTON, Ohio – Despite Victoria Adelhelm’s match-high 14 kills, the #11 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Dayton on Saturday evening. The Waves wrap action at the Flyer Classic with a 2-1 record, having previously defeated Ohio and #7 Illinois in straight sets.

Set scores for the contest were 25-19, 18-25, 26-24, 25-18.

Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) led all hitters with 14 kills earned on a commanding .480 (14-2-25) hitting percentage. The senior added three blocks, seven digs and an ace in her well-rounded effort.

The senior middle blocker was by far the most productive player on the court for either team. Shayne Brown was the only other hitter to come close, tallying nine kills hitting .389.

Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) registered her second kills-digs double-double of the weekend with 12 kills and 15 digs.

The Waves’ defense was paced by Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS), who collected 19 digs.

Although Pepperdine out-killed Dayton 51-44, and maintained a marginally better hitting percentage, the Flyers racked up 10 service aces while only committing five errors. The Waves managed three aces, but were charged for 12 errors.

Pepperdine had a hard time putting the ball away in the opening frame, and managed just 10 kills off 32 attacks for a hitting percentage of .094. Although Adelhelm provided an offensive boost with an errorless 5-for-7 effort, the Flyers took the first set 25-19.

Pepperdine settled into its rhythm in the second stanza, improving the success rate on the attack to .364 highlighted by just two miscues the entire set. Lexi Weldon (Tallahassee, Fla./Chiles HS) came off the bench and added four kills on six attacks and no errors. Adelhelm mirrored those numbers, while Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) contributed three put aways and two blocks to help win the set 25-18.

The Waves led by as much as five points in the third set, but a late Flyer run proved detrimental for Pepperdine. After a 6-1 Dayton scoring run put the lead in the home teams’ favor, the Waves were unable to respond and suffered a heartbreaking 26-24 loss to fall behind 2-1 overall.

With the momentum riding in Dayton’s favor, the Flyers sprinted to an 8-3 lead in the opening points of set four. With Adelhelm at the service line the Waves were able to close the gap to one at 13-12, but fueled by a boisterous home crowd Dayton was able to maintain the advantage. A Wave attack error would clinch the match for the Flyers, 25-18.

Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) dished 44 assists in the loss, while Alyssa Mason (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) posted seven kills.

Matalee Reed (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) and Natalie Riddering (Sacramento, Calif./El Camino Fundamental HS) saw action for the first time this season. Reed was credited with a block assists, while Riddering tallied three digs and an ace.

Adelhelm and Woolever were both later voted to the all-tournament team for their solid weekend efforts.

Next up is the annual Pepperdine Asics Classic, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Waves welcome Cal State Fullerton, Arizona and the Chinese club team Jiangsu to Firestone Fieldhouse for the two-day tournament.
