DAYTON, Ohio – The #11 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team shut out Ohio 3-0 during the 2012 season opener at the Dayton Flyer Classic. Outside hitter Katie Messing was a force for the Waves with 13 kills earned on a .565 hitting percentage, while senior middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm chipped in nine kills and five blocks.

Although Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) did not get the opening day start, she made her presence immediately known when she came off the bench early in the first set. The sophomore did not commit a single attack error and earned her 13 kills on 23 swings for a career-high hitting percentage of .565.

Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) hit .500 in the match, while Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) was an errorless 7-for-12 on the attack and had three blocks.

Freshman Alyssa Mason (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) made her debut as a Wave with five kills and four blocks.

Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) reached double digits with 10 digs each, and Woolever dished out a match-high 28 assists.

The Waves, who are now 25-13 all-time in season openers, stayed on point on the offensive end with a .307 (42-11-101) hitting percentage. The Bobcats were limited to just a .073 (30-22-109) success rate led by Kelly Lamberti’s 11 kills.

Although the Bobcats got off to a hot start in set one and took a 4-1 lead, the Waves battled right back with six unanswered points punctuated by a Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) service ace. Pepperdine did not surrender the lead the duration of the frame, and won 25-16.

Both Cash and Messing led the offensive assault with four kills apiece. Overall, the Waves hit for a .312 (14-4-32) hitting percentage in the first set, and limited Ohio to just a .150 (12-6-40) clip.

The Bobcats battled closely with the Waves in set two, as the lead was tied on seven occasions in the opening points. Up by just one at 13-12, Pepperdine exploded on offense and took a nine-point lead at 24-15. Adelhelm and Messing both posted a pair of kills in the span, while Mason and Woolever both added one. Although Ohio was able to get three points back, Adelhelm punched home another kill – her fourth of the frame – to put point No. 25 on the board and give Pepperdine the two set lead.

Messing was unstoppable in game two, with six kills off of nine attacks.

The Waves didn’t skip a beat following the intermission, and sprinted out to a 6-1 advantage to begin the third set. There was no let up for Pepperdine, as the team extended its lead to as much as 15. The Waves closed out the stanza at 25-14 to cap the victory.

Six of the nine players to see action in the third frame registered kills.

Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) came off the bench in the third set and posted five digs and four assists.

The Waves continue action at the Dayton Flyer Classic tomorrow with matches against #7 Illinois (7 a.m. PT) and Dayton (4:30 p.m.).
