First-year head coach Troy Tanner to be assisted in 2014 by Kyle Luongo and Alex Dunphy.
Alex Dunphy joined the women’s volleyball staff as an assistant coach in January of 2014 and enters her third season on the sidelines in 2016. She returned to Malibu after spending one season as an assistant coach for Miami (Fla.). She previously worked as the Director of Operations for Pepperdine’s men’s volleyball team.
"I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be back at Pepperdine," said Dunphy upon her hiring. "Pepperdine has always been synonymous with family to me, and I can't thank Dr. (Steve) Potts enough for giving me the opportunity to return home."
Dunphy grew up in Malibu and has always been closely affiliated with Pepperdine volleyball. She is the daughter of Hall of Fame coach Dr. Marv Dunphy, who is now in his third decade as the Waves' men's volleyball coach.
In 2007, Dunphy graduated from USC with a degree in communication. She was a member of the Trojans’ volleyball team for two seasons, including the 2003 campaign that saw the Women of Troy win their second-straight NCAA title.
From 2007-13, Dunphy served as the Director of Volleyball Operations for Pepperdine's men's volleyball team. Duties included coordinating travel, statistical breakdowns and other administrative responsibilities.
Following the 2013 men's volleyball season, Dunphy was hired as an assistant coach for the Miami women’s volleyball team, serving under head coach Jose Gandara. In addition to working with the Hurricanes' setters, Dunphy also assisted with recruiting, practices and video breakdown. Miami posted a 19-12 overall record in 2013 and made its fifth-consecutive appearance at the NCAA Tournament.
Since 2003, Dunphy has coached at the annual Marv Dunphy Volleyball Camp. She's also been a camp coach for Scott Wong, Nina Matthies and Mick Haley.
Her coaching resume also includes a stint with the Santa Monica Beach Club and USA Volleyball. In 2012, she served as the Head of Delegation for the U.S. Women's Junior National Team during the squad's run at the NORCECA Women's Junior (U20) Continental Championship in Managua, Nicaragua. Team USA won the bronze and with it a bid to the 2013 FIVB Women's Junior Continental Championship.
Dunphy earned her master's degree in communication from Pepperdine in 2015.
