MALIBU, Calif. – Head coach Gualberto Escudero and the women’s tennis team announced the addition of Lorraine Guillermo to the 2011-12 roster.  Guillermo signed a National Letter-of-Intent and will join the Waves next fall.

“Lorraine is a very exciting prospect for the 2011-12 season,” remarked assistant coach Scott Doerner.  “She brings a lot of top experience from the Southern California junior circuit and is an extremely tough competitor.  She has played in a lot of matches, and should have little trouble adjusting to playing at the collegiate level.”

Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) joins an established Pepperdine squad that made its 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament at the end of the 2009-10 season.  The Waves graduated just one senior from that squad (Tania Rice), welcomed one new freshman (Megan Moore) and have just concluded a solid fall tournament season.

The Waves will graduate just two players (Anamika Bhargava and Khunpak Issara) at the end of the 2010-11 campaign.  With such a small turnover, some might worry that it is difficult to welcome in a new face to such a tight knit group.

“Lorraine has a likeableness that few junior circuit players have,” continued Doerner.  “She is well respected and liked amongst her peers as well as with coaches and parents.  We believe she’s a perfect fit for our group of student-athletes and is going to have a great career as a Wave.

“In addition to being an established singles player, she is also active in doubles.  We are really going to look to her to be a solid and consistent contributor right away for the team.

“She has a great serve and possesses an impressive amount of power, especially for a player of her size.”

Pepperdine has just concluded its fall tournament portion of the season and returns to competition on Sat., Jan 22 for an 11 a.m. home dual versus Cal Poly.
