MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women’s tennis team concludes the fall tournament season with two different events this weekend. Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo, announced today as the October West Coast Conference doubles team of the month, head to Flushing, N.Y. for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The remaining members of the team will compete at the Jack Kramer Invitational on Nov. 9-11 in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.

Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) won the consolation bracket at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships to earn the bid to the national indoor tournament and pick up WCC Doubles Team of the Month honors.

The duo, ranked No. 7 in the preseason ITA doubles poll, suffered in early loss in the main draw but fired back with four-straight wins - all against ranked teams - to win the consolation bracket. Guillermo and Issara defeated teams from Memphis, Stanford, Cal, and Florida.

They first rallied to defeat Memphis’ Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd 8-6 before knocking out two top-10 ranked teams in the quarter and semifinals. The Waves made short work of #9-ranked Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay of Stanford, topping the Cardinal 8-2. Guillermo and Issara then eliminated Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting, ranked third, of California by the same score.

In the finals, Guillermo and Issara controlled the match from start to finish and defeated #14 Danielle Collins and Lauren Embree of Florida – the defending NCAA team champions – by a score of 8-3.

This is the fourth time the Pepperdine tandem has earned WCC Doubles Team of the Month accolades.

USTA/ITA NATIONAL INDOOR INTERCOLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP - Issara and Granillo open play at the indoor championships on Thursday, Nov. 8. The event will be held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center -- home of the U.S. Open -- in Flushing, N.Y. It is the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis and serves as the culmination of the fall season. This prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw. Draws for the tournament, which begins on Thursday, Nov. 8, will be released later this week and can be found on the ITA website. Gualberto Escudero - Now in his 36th season at the helm of the program, Gualberto Escudero enters the 2012-13 season with a career record of 620-317 (.662). He took over as head coach in 1977-78 after a decorated career as a student-athlete at Pepperdine. Pepperdine won conference titles in 1969 and 1970 and finished second the next two seasons. His transition from player to coach was a successful one as Escudero has tutored 31 All-Americans, and was honored as WCC Coach of the Year on three occasions.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest enrollment and is the only school not in a major conference. Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation’s most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #54 overall on U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges.
