Women's Tennis Closes Out Fall Tournament Action

Malibu, Calif. - Second seed Sylvia Kosakowski was upset by No. 6 seed Marion Ravelojaona of Cal, 6-2, 6-3 in a quarterfinal match at the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Arizona State. Freshmen Tania Rice and Jill Braverman played in consolation singles after falling in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Rice defeated Fernanda Da Valle of Kansas State 6-4, 6-2 before taking down Allie Shafner of Michigan 6-2, 6-0. If the consolation draw resumes, Rice will face Brooke Beier of Purdue Sunday. Braverman tried her luck in consolations, but fell in the first round.
In doubles, Kosakowski and Braverman were defeated by Mallory Voelker and Beier of Purdue, 8-4. The tandem is scheduled to face Viviana Yrureta and Da Valle of Kansas State at 8:30 a.m.
Pepperdine's Vanessa Dunlap and Alicia Poladian opened play yesterday at the San Diego State Classic. Each played in the third flight of singles. Dunlap fell to San Diego State's Yuki Hagiwara 6-3, 6-2. The junior will face Caitlin Aloia of Saint Mary's tomorrow in the consolation. Aloia defeated Poladian 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of action. In the consolation singles for Poladian, the sophomore fell to New Mexico's Maria Sotirchos 6-0, 6-1.
