MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women’s tennis team looks to divide and conquer this week, sending student-athlete representatives to the SDSU Fall Classic and the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. The SDSU Fall Classic begins Friday and concludes on Sunday, while the All-American Championship will start on Saturday for the Waves.

ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP - Three Waves were extended invites to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship, including Lorraine Guillermo, Ale Granillo and Matea Cutura. Cutura opens the tournament in the prequalifying singles round on Saturday at UCLA. Guillermo and Granillo are also slated to play in the prequalification doubles draw.  Following prequalification, the remainder of the championship will play out at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Qualification runs Oct. 1-2, Monday and Tuesday, where Guillermo and Granillo will compete in three rounds of singles. The main draw plays out Oct. 3-6.

SDSU FALL CLASSIC - The remaining members of the team will head to San Diego State for the SDSU Fall Classic, Sept. 27-29.

LOOKING BACK - The Waves opened the fall season at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas. After four Pepperdine players reached the singles round of 16, Lorraine Guillermo, Yuki Chiang and Matea Cutura emerged as quarterfinalists. Guillermo went on to defeat two top-30 ranked players to win the singles crown.

LOOKING AHEAD - Next up on Pepperdine’s fall schedule is the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, held at both San Diego and San Diego State.

RETURNERS - Four student-athletes, all regulars in last year’s lineup, return in 2013-14 including senior Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo), junior Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), and sophomores Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS).

NEWCOMERS - Five new players, including three freshmen, were added to the roster this season. Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) comes to Malibu after earning BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Year notice in one season at DePaul. The Waves’ three freshmen additions include Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS), Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) and Pattaraporn Salirathavibhaga (Bangkok, Thailand/International School Bangkok). Miquela Newhart (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) also joined the squad after spending a season studying at Colorado.

DID YOU KNOW ... That head coach Gualberto Escudero ranks second among all women’s tennis coaches -- active and inactive -- with 632 career wins? Escudero, now in his 37th year at the helm, is just one of three coaches to have reached the 600 wins milestone. Lin Loring, who has been a head coach at both Indiana and UC Santa Barbara for a combined 40 seasons, ranks #1 with almost 800 wins, while Georgia’s head coach Jeff Wallace recently hit the 600-win mark after 28 seasons.

Gualberto Escudero - Now in his 37th season at the helm of the program, Gualberto Escudero enters the 2013-14 campaign with a career record of 632-329 (.657).   He took over as head coach in 1977-78 after a decorated career as a student-athlete at Pepperdine.  On the court, he was a finalist at the 1969 WCAC singles tournament and won the doubles title with John Lovelace.  Pepperdine won conference titles in 1969 and 1970 and finished second the next two seasons. His transition from player to coach was a successful one as Escudero has tutored 31 All-Americans, and was honored as WCC Coach of the Year on four occasions.   Escudero will be inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Oct. 20. For more information on attending the Hall of Fame Ceremony, contact jamil.macias@pepperdine.edu.

Lorraine Guillermo - Guillermo boasts an impressive resume in her two short years in Malibu. As a freshman, she earned ITA All-American status in doubles and was the 2012 WCC Freshman of the Year. In 2013 as a sophomore, she garnered All-WCC first team status for the second-straight year in doubles. She was also a first team selection in singles after being voted to the second team as a freshman. Guillermo holds the Pepperdine program record for career winning percentage -- .846 -- in doubles (dual season only) with Khunpak Issara. The pair went 33-6 in two seasons together, which also ranks third in the program annuls for total wins.

Ale Granillo - Granillo, now a senior, went 16-7 in singles during the 2013 dual season -- the most wins of any returning player. She ended the year on an 11-match win streak, which she will hope to extend at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. Although she will not be competing this weekend, Granillo won the singles draw at the 2011 Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE - Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men’s sports - one of just 16 schools to have accomplished this feat - and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest enrollment and is the only school not in a major conference. Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation’s most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #54 overall on U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges.
