2013 ITA REGIONAL AWARD WINNERS

MALIBU, Calif. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its regional award winners today and the Pepperdine men’s and women’s tennis teams were well represented amongst the honorees.

On the women’s side, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) was voted the ITA Southwest Region Player to Watch. The Player to Watch award is given to a student-athlete who has been ranked in the top-20 at some point this season and is poised to become one of the nations’ elite. Guillermo has been listed in the top-20 in doubles all season long with Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and is currently up to #32 in the singles rankings.

The sophomore has held down the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup in 2013 and will represent Pepperdine in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, beginning May 23 in Urbana, Ill.

Scott Doerner was honored as the Southwest Assistant Coach of the Year. Doerner was instrumental in the Waves’ turnaround season that began with an 0-9 start but concluded with a West Coast Conference tournament championship and the team’s 26th-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

An accomplished doubles player himself, he is also an integral part in the development of Guillermo and Issara as a doubles pair. The duo, ITA All-Americans last season after reaching the NCAA Doubles Championship quarterfinals, won the back draw at the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championship and has reached as high as #4 in the doubles rankings.

Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) took home two accolades: Southwest Senior Player of the Year and the Southwest Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. Fanselow is one of the premier players in the country and currently holds a singles ranking of #11. He was previously awarded for his conduct on the court when he earned the ITA Sportsmanship Award at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Queens, N.Y. Fanselow reached the finals of the singles draw after eliminating top-seeded Alex Domijan of Virginia.

Fanselow was the ITA National Player to Watch last year as a junior.

Jason Cook was labeled the region’s Assistant Coach of the Year in just his second season with the Waves. Under Cook’s tutelage, Pepperdine reach as high as #5 in the team rankings in 2013 and enter tomorrow’s NCAA Tournament round of 16 match vs. Memphis with a 26-5 record.

All regional award winners are automatically eligible for the national award in their respective categories, which will be announced on May 21 at the ITA Awards Ceremony in conjunction with the NCAA Tournament in Urbana, Ill.
