May 8, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s and women’s tennis teams continue to receive praise from the West Coast Conference, winning three WCC Player of the Month awards for the month of April. Sebastian Fanselow was dubbed the Singles Player of the Month, and was also picked as the Doubles Team of the Month along with partner Jenson Turner. On the women’s side, Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara won Doubles Team of the Month for the third time this season.
Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) went a perfect 8-0 during the month of April in singles. The junior, recently named both the West Coast Conference Player of the Year and the Pepperdine Male Athlete of the Year, did not drop a single set and picked up three wins over ranked opponents. Fanselow, who is currently ranked #9 in singles by the ITA, also earned a spot in the 2012 NCAA Singles Championship. By virtue of capturing the eight seed, he has secured ITA All-American honors for the second straight season.
Other awards the junior has collected this month include All-WCC first team honors in both singles and doubles. As a team, the No. 7-ranked Waves went 11-0 in April and captured the WCC regular season and tournament titles.
This is the second-consecutive time Fanselow has been voted WCC Singles Player of the Month, and fifth occasion overall.
Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Fanselow steamrolled through the month of April in doubles with an untainted 10-0 record. The duo, who has teamed together for the last two seasons, boasts a career win tally (dual season only) of 33. That mark ranks tied for fifth in Pepperdine’s career record book. Turner and Fanselow were voted to the All-WCC first team in doubles.
This is the first time this season, and second time overall that Turner and Fanselow have picked up doubles team of the month recognition.
Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) have been a consistently solid doubles team for women’s team this season, and April was no exception. Issara and Guillermo went a perfect 8-0 to improve their overall win streak to 13 matches. Their overall record this dual season stands at 19-3 which ranks tied for fifth for the most wins by any Pepperdine team in a single season. For their success, Issara and Guillermo were honored as an All-WCC first team selection in doubles. Additionally, Guillermo was honored as the WCC Freshman of the Year.
Issara and Guillermo have won WCC Doubles Team of the Month a league-best three times this season.
Both the men’s and women’s teams open the NCAA Championship this weekend, May 11-12. The Wave men play host to Washington, North Carolina State and first round opponent Green Bay, while the women travel to Berkeley, Calif. to face Purdue in the opening round.
