Waves Collect All-WCC Honors
April 21, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – All six lineup regulars of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team earned All-West Coast Conference honors today, it was announced by the league office. Leading the way was Lorraine Guillermo, Matea Cutura and Ale Granillo who were all-conference selections in both singles and doubles.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) made her second-straight appearance on the singles first-team roster after making her way on to the second team as a freshman. The junior is an impressive 29-9 this season, including an 8-1 record vs. WCC foes.
She was the first and only player in the league to beat 2013 and 2014 WCC Player of the Year Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary’s, and just the second overall the entire dual season.
The Waves’ ace also landed on the doubles first team alongside freshman Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy). The pair took over the No. 1 spot in the lineup midway through the season and produced a record of 7-1. Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai were voted WCC Doubles Team of the Week twice.
Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) earned second team recognition in both singles and doubles.
Cutura played at No. 2 in the Waves’ singles lineup this dual season and tallied eight wins, while senior Granillo held down the No. 3 spot with a 12-4 record. She enters this week’s conference championship on an eight match win streak.
Despite a whole 12 inch difference in stature, the 6-foot Cutura and 5-foot Granillo made for a superb doubles pair. Playing at both No. 2 and No. 3, the tandem produced a 12-2 record and was rewarded to back-to-back-to-back WCC Doubles Team of the Week honors. They are the only doubles pair to three peat in 2014.
Sophomore-freshman combo Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) were also rewarded with a mention on the second team doubles roster. The top-75 ranked duo earned nine wins in dual play, and is the only Pepperdine pair besides Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai to win from the No. 1 position in the lineup.
Capannolo and Chiang went a perfect 5-0 against league opponents and have won the last five in a row.
Pepperdine opens the WCC Tournament in the semifinals on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The Waves will face Santa Clara, San Diego, Loyola Marymount or Portland. The finals are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Full coverage can be found at the WCC Tournament Central.
