Men's & Women's Tennis Advance to WCC Finals


 
 

 SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pepperdine men and women’s tennis teams look to continue their WCC Championship reign with both teams advancing to tomorrow’s finals.

The men will be going after their 40th WCC crown and 19th straight championship. The women hope to come home with their 21st title of the 23 WCC women’s tournaments to date. They have won the last six championships.

Saturday’s semifinal saw the No. 1 Waves sweep No. 4 San Francisco, 4-0. With wins on courts 1 and 2 in doubles Pepperdine captured the doubles-point to lead 1-0, going into singles. Omar Altmann (PEP) gave the Waves their first singles point with a 6-2, 6-0, straight set win over Tommy Tu (USF) on court 1. Bassam Beidas (PEP) followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Asaf Cohen (USF) on court 2 and Alex Llompart (PEP) clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Rainer Nauchbauer (USF) on court 3.

 

Meanwhile, the No. 1 women were battling windy conditions to win the double point over No. 4 San Francisco. Andrea Oates/Alexandria Walters (PEP) defeated Julia Wartenbuger/Alana MacMahon (USF) on court 2 to give Pepperdine its first doubles win. A determined Dons team answered back with Mylene Martin/Sarah Oudomvilay (USF) defeating Tania Rice/Zlatka Petrova (PEP), 8-2, on court 3, to tie the score 1-1. Anamika Bhargava/Alex Liles (PEP) battled Cecilia Gatian/Jennifer-Lee Heisner (USF) to a 9-8 (2) tiebreaker win on court 1.

 

In singles, Walters (PEP) defeated Martin (USF) 6-2, 6-1, on court 2, while Liles (PEP) defeated Wartenburger (USF)  6-1, 6-1, on court 3. The Waves led 3-0. Rice’s (PEP) 6-2, 6-1, straight set win over Jessy Mekpoh on court 4 clinched the win for Pepperdine with a 4-0 sweep.

 

Sunday, April 19, the men will play the winner of Saturday’s No. 2 San Diego vs. No. 3 Portland match, at 11:30 a.m. The women will face the winner of the No. 2 San Diego vs. No. 3 Saint Mary’s match, at 3 p.m. The winners of the each finals will advance to round 1 of the NCAA’s.
