MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women’s tennis team, now victorious in six of its last seven matches, closes out the regular season with duals at #71 Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, April 17 and BYU on Friday, April 19. The Waves are 5-1 in West Coast Conference action and could split a share of the regular-season title should they win both matches this week.

A LOOK AT THE LEAGUE - The Waves are currently tied for second place in the WCC standings with a 5-1 record along with Santa Clara ... Saint Mary’s, all done with conference play, is in first place at 7-1 ... Should both Pepperdine and Santa Clara win both scheduled matches this week, there would be a three-way tie for first place in the regular-season standings ... Pepperdine has won the WCC Tournament 22 times of the 25 years it has been contested ... Only three other teams have won a single conference championship: Loyola Marymount (2002), Saint Mary’s (2010) and San Diego (2012).
LOOKING BACK - The Waves fell to Saint Mary’s before bouncing back with a 4-3 win over San Diego ... Pepperdine was up 3-0 before the Toreros stormed back to win three-straight singles matches and knot the score at 3-all ... Freshman Danielle Feneridis split sets before buckling down for a 6-1 triumph in the third and deciding frame to lift the Waves to the team victory.

STREAKING - Khunpak Issara improved her win streak in singles to 14 matches last week with two wins on the road ... Issara accounted for the Waves’ lone point vs. Saint Mary’s ... The senior is a team-best 17-2 in duals this season ... Issara and Lorraine Guillermo have won the last 11-straight doubles matches ... Ale Granillo boasts a six-match win streak in singles.
INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS - Khunpak Issara, who earned a fall preseason singles rank #39, began the 2013 dual season tied at #92, reached as high as #43 and is currently at #56. .. Lorraine Guillermo was ranked #104 in singles to begin the season and moved up to a season-best ranking of #31 on April 9 ... Ale Granillo entered the rankings on Feb. 12, reach as high as #110, but is currently not ranked ... In doubles, Issara and Guillermo boasted a preseason doubles ranking of #7 and are currently #11 after being ranked as high as #4.
DID YOU KNOW ... That head coach Gualberto Escudero ranks second among all women’s tennis coaches -- active and inactive -- with 628 career wins? Escudero, now in his 36th year at the helm, is just one of three coaches to have reached the 600 wins milestone. Lin Loring, who has been a head coach at both Indiana and UC Santa Barbara for a combined 40 seasons, ranks #1 with almost 800 wins, while Georgia’s head coach Jeff Wallace recently hit the 600-win mark after 28 seasons.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT - LMU is 10-9 but just 2-4 in league action ... Last week, the Lions suffered back-to-back 4-3 losses to Saint Mary’s and San Diego ... A win on the road would mean 1.5 points for Pepperdine in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup Standings ... Loyola Marymount currently leads the annual competition 10.0-8.5 ... The Waves are 33-2 all-time vs. LMU.
BYU - The Cougars are 9-9 overall and 2-4 in league play ... Pepperdine is 7-8 all-time vs. BYU but has not lost to the Cougars since the 1998 season.

WCC DOUBLES TEAM OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara have won the conference award in doubles four of the five months it has been awarded in 2012-13. The duo won WCC Doubles Team of the Month in both October, November, February and March to bring their total award count to seven.
WCC SINGLES PLAYER OF THE MONTH - Lorraine Guillermo went a perfect 3-0 in singles in September at the SDSU Fall Classic to open the 2012 fall season. Guillermo defeated opponents from San Diego and North Texas to win the top-tier red bracket.
WRITING RECORDS - Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara’s 2012 doubles win tally of 20 ranks fifth in Pepperdine’s single season record book. The duo’s career dual win tally of 33 ranks third. Five more wins will give the duo ownership of second place all-time.
Gualberto Escudero - Now in his 36th season at the helm of the program, Gualberto Escudero enters the 2012-13 season with a career record of 620-317 (.662). He took over as head coach in 1977-78 after a decorated career as a student-athlete at Pepperdine. On the court, he was a finalist at the 1969 WCAC singles tournament and won the doubles title with John Lovelace. Pepperdine won conference titles in 1969 and 1970 and finished second the next two seasons. His transition from player to coach was a successful one as Escudero has tutored 31 All-Americans, and was honored as WCC Coach of the Year on three occasions.
