Women's Tennis Sweeps WCC Honors
April 1, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team, up to #29 in the ITA rankings, once again swept this week’s West Coast Conference honors. Lorraine Guillermo was named both the WCC Singles Player of the Week and the Doubles Team of the Week along with teammate Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai. This is the fourth time this season the Waves have swept the awards in both singles and doubles.
Pepperdine topped both San Diego and BYU on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center last week, taking over sole possession of first place in the league standings as a result. The Cougars were undefeated in conference action prior to Saturday’s meeting, after upsetting preseason favorite Saint Mary’s the week prior.
The Waves are now 10-4 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in WCC matches.
Junior Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) tallied two straight-set singles wins last week. Pepperdine’s ace, currently ranked #25 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated the Toreros’ Marta Stojanovic 6-2, 6-1, before downing the Cougars’ Mayci Jones 6-3, 6-1.
Guillermo now boasts an 11-3 record from her No. 1 spot in the lineup, and is 24-8 overall this season.
In doubles, Guillermo, along with freshman Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) improved to a perfect 5-0 in dual play after posting two victories last week. The duo first defeated Shani Blecher and Stojanovic handily, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point for the Waves last Friday vs. San Diego.
The following day, Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai won their fifth straight with an 8-5 triumph over Jones and Toby Miclat. To date, Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai are the only pair to win at No. 1 for the Waves this season. In addition to being a perfect 5-0 in dual action, the pair boasts a 7-1 overall record.
This is the league-best third time Guillermo has been honored as the Singles Player of the Week. This is the sixth time a Pepperdine pair has won Doubles Team of the Week acclaim, and second for Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai.
The Waves have now won six in a row as a team as they enter this week’s Tour de Pacific Northwest, with stops at # 48 Washington State (April 3), Gonzaga (April 4) and Portland (April 5).
