No. 8 USC Defeats No. 19 Pepperdine, 5-2, on Friday

MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 19 Pepperdine women's tennis team fell to eighth-ranked USC, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The Trojans won the first match between the two Southern California schools earlier this season, 6-1, in Los Angeles.

The Waves dropped to 5-4 on the season, while USC improved to 6-2.

In doubles, Eva Dickes paired up with Anete Bandere at No. 3 and put away the 24th-ranked duo of Sarah Fansler and Dianne Matias, 8-4. But the Trojans came up with 8-4 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 for the point. Lindsey Nelson and Julie Smekodub defeated Sylvia Kosakowski and Caroline Raba at the first position, while No. 31 Judy De Vera and Amanda Fink defeated Bianca Dulgheru and Katia Sabate.

Nelson defeated Dulgheru at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-3. The two also squared off in the first meeting with Dulgheru taking the win 6-4, 6-2. No. 89 Fink defeated Sabate 6-2, 6-4, while No. 48 Anca Anastasiu snapped Tania Rice's five-match win streak with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Raba defeated No. 77 Matias 6-4, 6-2 to put the Waves on the board. After falling 7-5 in the first set to 12th-ranked Fansler, No. 94 Kosakowski came back to win the second set 6-3 and then gave Pepperdine its second point with a 10-5 win in the super-breaker.

Pepperdine opens its first of three matches on the road on Tuesday against San Diego State at 2 p.m.
