Waves Sweep WCC Awards for Second Straight Week
Feb. 18, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – For the second week in a row, the Pepperdine women’s tennis team swept the West Coast Conference Player of the Week awards. Junior Lorraine Guillermo was dubbed the Singles Player of the Week, while Ale Granillo and Matea Cutura took Doubles Team of the Week honors.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) helped lift the Waves, ranked #39 last week, to wins over #60 UNLV and #25 Arizona State.
Pepperdine’s win over ASU was the program’s first against a top-25 opponent since the Waves swept #22 Purdue in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Pepperdine was rewarded for its success in today’s new issue of ITA rankings, jumping up 13 spots to #26.
Guillermo, listed at #23 in the ITA singles rankings, won twice from the No. 1 spot in the lineup last week. She first faced Rebel ace Lucia Batta. With a singles ranking of #36, Batta is the highest ranked player Guillermo has faced in dual action to date in 2014. Guillermo proved up to the challenge and disposed of Batta 6-1, 6-4.
The very next day vs. the Sun Devils, Guillermo was once again victorious, downing #73 Stephanie Vlad 2-6, 6-3, 10-1.
Despite standing a foot apart, 6-foot-0 Cutura and 5-foot-0 Granillo make for a solid doubles pair. The duo produced two wins together last weekend, including the point clincher vs. Arizona State.
The sophomore-senior combo put the first match away for the Waves versus the Rebels, logging an 8-1 decision against Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga. The Wave tandem then clinched the doubles point vs. ASU in a must-win situation.
After battling for every hold of serve, Cutura and Granillo finally got the break they needed while playing ASU’s Stephanie Vlad and Ebony Panoho to take a 4-2 lead. The Waves rode the momentum to an 8-4 victory to secure the doubles point for Pepperdine.
Cutura and Granillo are now defending a four-match win streak as they travel to UCLA on Wednesday. Guillermo has won two in a row, as she prepares for her singles match vs. Bruins’ ace and #2-ranked Robin Anderson. Guillermo went 1-1 against Anderson last year, including a straight-set win in dual play.
