Southern Cal Blanks Waves, 7-0
Feb. 3, 2005
Malibu, Calif. - Pepperdine could not regain momentum after USC took all three doubles matches en route to sweeping the Waves 7-0 Thursday. This was the first home loss for the Waves this season, who fall to 2-2 overall. The Women of Troy stay perfect at 3-0.
Pepperdine's team of Caroline Raba and Sylvia Kosakowski jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Nicole Limbach and Carine Vermeulen in the number one doubles match. USC fought back, winning seven of the next nine games to take an 8-7 lead. The Waves broke the Trojans' serve to force a deciding tiebreak. An early 5-1 lead was too much for Pepperdine to overcome as USC won the match and clinched the doubles point with the 9-8 set.
In the singles matches Southern California proved why they are the 7th-ranked team in the nation. On court two No. 29 Lindsey Nelson beat No. 65 Raba, 6-4, 6-2 to put USC up 3-0. No. 6 Nicole Leimbach defeated No. 52 Natalie Braverman in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) fending off a modest rally by the Pepperdine junior early in the second set to clinch the match at 4-0.
The No. 37 Waves host the 57th-ranked Long Beach State 49ers next Saturday, February 12.
