Women's Tennis Hosts Northridge on Tuesday
UPCOMING Â The No. 29 Pepperdine women’s tennis team (0-1) host Cal State Northridge on Tuesday. The team goes on its first road trip of the season when the Waves head to the ITA Regionals in Fayetville, Ark., this weekend.
MATCH #2 Â PEPPERDINE VS. CSUN (Jan. 27, 1:30 p.m.) at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, Malibu, Calif.Â Cal State Northridge (0-1) opened its season last week against UCLA with a 7-0 loss.
Sophomore Brooke Doane earned All-Big West Second Team honors for her doubles play last year.
MATCH #3 Â PEPPERDINE VS. NOTRE DAME (Jan. 31, 10:30 a.m.) Fayetville, Ark. Â The Waves meet No. 17 Notre Dame in the first match ot the ITA regionals. Notre Dame boasts the No. 1 nationally ranked doubles team of Kelcy Tefft and Kristi Frilling.
The Irish are coming off a 6-1 victory over Ohio State.
SACRAMENTO RECAP Â The No. 29 Pepperdine women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 59 Sacramento State, on Sunday afternoon.
"Sacramento played really well today," said assistant coach Scott Doerner. "They’re much improved from previous years. We had a couple injuries that hurt us, but it was the first match for our freshmen and they competed well. We have a long way to go, but the only way to go is up."
The Hornets won two of the doubles matches to secure the doubles point early in the afternoon.
Pepperdine’s Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) and Alex Liles (Largo, Fla./Saddleback Prep.) defeated Luba Schifris and Aileen Tsan (SAC), 8-1, on the No. 2 court.
PEPPERDINE IN THE POLLS Â The Waves are No. 29 in the latest ITA national rankings.
COACH ESCUDERO Â Coach Gualberto Escudero begins his 32nd season as head coach. Escudero joined Pepperdine at the start of the 1977-78 season and has compiled a career record of 568-274 over 31 seasons.
Escudero has led Pepperdine to the NCAA post-season on 25 occasions including each of the last 21 seasons. The Waves have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships on four occasions. Escudero directed Pepperdine’s 1984, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1999 and 2000 squads to the top 10 final rankings. In addition, the Waves have won 20 of the last 21 WCC titles, including five in a row.
Escudero’s Pepperdine women tennis players have been named All-American 29 times, WCC Player of the Year four times and WCC Freshman of the Year six times. His student-athletes have also earned WCC All-Academic honors on 33 occasions.
During his tenure at Pepperdine, Escudero was selected the ITA’s District VIII Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1992, the ITA West Region Coach of the Year in 2006 and has been named WCC Coach of the Year three times.
COACH DOERNER Â Coach Scott Doerner begins his second season as the women’s tennis assistant coach. A native of Melbourne, Australia, Doerner was working as the Pepperdine men’s volunteer assistant coach at the begining of 2007-08 season prior to being named to his new post.
Doerner is a familiar face to Pepperdine tennis, as he was a member of the men’s tennis team from 2002-03 through 2005-06 and was part of the squad that captured the 2006 NCAA championship.
Doerner was a standout on the court, as he was named an All-American in singles in 2006 and twice in doubles (2005 and 2006). He was named WCC’s Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Doerner ended his senior season ranked No. 14 in the ITA’s single rankings and a No. 2 national ranking in doubles with Andre Begemann.
