Issara and Guillermo's Run Ends at National Indoors
Nov. 10, 2012
FLUSHING, N.Y. – After a brilliant run to reach the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo’s run was halted there as the pair suffered defeat today. Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) earned the automatic bid to the 20-team national tournament by virtue of winning the consolation bracket at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships back in October. The duo, ranked #7 in the preseason doubles poll but unseeded in the tournament, defeated pairs from Texas A&M, Georgia and Tennessee to reach the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Issara and Guillermo upset the No. 2 seeded Lady Vols pair of Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely, 9-7. In the semifinals, which transitioned from an eight-game pro-set to a best-of-three sets format, the Waves dropped a close 7-5 decision to Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi of Virginia. With the momentum in their favor, the Cavaliers took set two 6-2 to end the Waves’ run. Issara and Guillermo close out the fall season with an impressive 7-2 record. The pair now takes a break until January, when the 2013 dual season begins the 31st at home against USC. USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship
