Women's Tennis Shines in Final Tournament of Fall Season
Nov. 9, 2013
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team wrapped up its fall season today with a successful outing at the Jack Kramer Club Collegiate Invitational. Yuki Chiang and Michaela Capannolo were victorious in doubles competition, while Capannolo was also a winner in singles play.
Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) upset top-seeded Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle of Baylor in the quarterfinals, 8-6. Although the Bears’ pair isn’t ranked together, Kisialeva is a highly touted doubles player. She is listed at No. 5 in the ITA preseason doubles rankings along with Ema Burgic.
In the semifinals the duo suffered a narrow loss to the team of Ferny Angeles Paz and Noelle Malley from Ohio State. After battling to an 8-8 tie, the Buckeyes earned the victory in the tiebreaker, 7-3.
Chiang’s run in singles was finally halted in the semifinals. After winning three matches since Thursday, the freshman was dealt a 6-1, 6-3 loss by top-seeded and #30-ranked Stefanie Tan of TCU.
Capannolo bested Grainne O'Neill of Ohio State 8-5 in consolation to end her fall on a high note.
This marks the end of the fall tennis season for the Pepperdine women. They begin dual play on January 30 at USC.
