Issara, Guillermo into National Indoor Quarterfinal

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team breezed through the first two rounds of the prestigious UTSA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship. The pair won twice today to advance to the doubles quarterfinals. Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), ranked #7 in the ITA preseason doubles poll, opened the tournament with an 8-3 win over Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov of Texas A&M. In the round of 16, the Wave pair faced #30-ranked Kate Fuller and Lauren Herring of Georgia, who had received a first-round bye. Issara and Guillermo handily won again by a score of 8-3. Tomorrow, the Pepperdine pair will face Kata Zekely and Brynn Boren of Tennessee on the courts of the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center – home of the U.S. Open – in the quarterfinals. Zekely and Boren are ranked #34 in the preseason polls, and are the tournament’s No. 2 overall seed.
