Guillermo's Magnificent Run at Regional Championships Comes to a Close
Oct. 21, 2012
SAN DIEGO – Sophomore Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team battled one of the top players in the country today in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships. Although Guillermo won the first set, she was unable emerge with the overall victory and saw her run at regionals come to an end.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) faced Robin Anderson of UCLA in the semifinals. Anderson holds a preseason singles ranking of #3, and is the tournament’s overall top seed. The sophomore Wave struck first, winning the first frame in the tiebreaker.
Anderson was unable to rebound, however, and won the final two sets 6-3, 6-3.
Although it was Guillermo’s first loss of the 2012-13 season, the 2012 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year still boasts a team-best singles record of 7-1.
Guillermo is also a standout in doubles, along with partner Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School). The pair recently won the consolation draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships to earn a spot at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships next month.
The indoor championships run Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The same weekend, Nov. 9-11, select members of the Pepperdine squad will also compete at the Jack Kramer Invitational in Rolling Meadows, Calif.
