Lorraine Guillermo Continues at USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship
Oct. 20, 2012 SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sophomore Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team posted another win today at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship – her fourth of the tournament – to advance to the semifinals. Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) faced Kim Stubbe, ranked #72 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, in the quarterfinals today at the Barnes Tennis Center. The two contestants were very evenly matched, but the Wave emerged with the 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory. Overall this season, Guillermo boasts an untainted 7-0 singles record. Tomorrow, she will face Robins Anderson of UCLA. Anderson sits at #3 in the singles poll and is the top-seeded player in the tournament. Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) also reached the singles quarterfinal, but suffered defeated to #8-ranked Sabrina Santamaria of USC. In the consolation round, Abigail Phillips gritted out a win in the super tiebreaker against Natalie McKay of UC Riverside. Phillips and Tara Panu’s (Los Alamitos, Calif./The Harker School) run came to an end in doubles, as the duo lost to Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Stadfelt, 8-4.
