Guillermo One of Four Left Standing at USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship
Oct. 19, 2013
SAN DIEGO – Junior Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team continued her winning ways at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, advancing to the singles semifinal round. In doubles, three of the Waves’ double teams reached the quarterfinals.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), who has yet to drop a set in the tournament, defeated Akilah James of Arizona 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16 to punch her ticket into the quarterfinals. She then handed Laura Antonana Iriarte a 6-4, 6-0 loss to become one of four players left standing.
She’ll face the winner of Jennifer Brady and Zoe Katz in tomorrow’s semifinal. Brady, the No. 13 seed out of UCLA, upset No. 5-seeded and #40-ranked Lacey Smyth yesterday in the round of 16.
USC’s Katz first upset Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) in the round of 32 before knocking out her teammate Zoe Scandalis. Scandalis is ranked #17 and was seeded second, while Katz entered the tournament unranked.
In doubles, all three Pepperdine pairs opened the day with the “W” to reach the quarterfinals. Unseeded Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) downed the No. 8 seeded tandem of Ali Facey and Fraziska Goettsching, 8-6 before falling to #19 Brynn Boren and Katz, 8-5.
Guillermo and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy), as well as Cutura and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo), suffered a similar fate. Both won in the round of 16 before falling to talent out of USC.
Capannolo and Pattaraporn Salirathavibhaga (Bangkok, Thailand/International School Bangkok) ended their runs at the regional championship with wins in consolation.
Guillermo will be the only Pepperdine player in action tomorrow. A win would put the junior in Monday’s championship match. Additionally, head coach Gualberto Escudero will be enshrined into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Sunday evening.
