Waves Open Strong at USTA/ITA Southwest Regional
Oct. 19, 2012 SAN DIEGO – Lorraine Guillermo and Ale Granillo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team are through to the singles quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, while Tara Panu and newcomer Abigail Phillips advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles bracket. Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), who received a bye in the opening round, defeated UCLA’s Holly Flemming 6-3, 6-1, before downing Susan McRann, 6-1, 6-0. Although the sophomore split sets with Laura Iriarte of host school San Diego State, Guillermo charged back in the final frame and won by a single break to advance to the quarterfinals. Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) will also represent the Waves in the singles quarterfinals. The junior, ranked #74 in the ITA preseason rankings, registered straight-set wins in the first two rounds to handily advance to the round of 16. There, she dropped the first frame to #86 Chanelle Van Nguyen before rebounding 6-3, 7-5 to move on. Guillermo will face #72-ranked Kim Stubbe of Arizona on Saturday, while Granillo takes on USC’s #8 Sabrina Santamaria. Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) opened the regional with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kalika Stevcove of Cal State Fullerton, and went on to defeat the Bruins’ Catherine Harrison in three sets. Issara’s run would end in the round of 16, where she fell to another UCLA player, Kaitlin Ray. In doubles, Panu (Los Alamitos, Calif./The Harker School) and recent addition Phillips teamed up and defeated Michela Casanova and Isabelle Hoorn 8-3. The duo continues in the round of 16 tomorrow.
