SAN DIEGO – The ladies of the Pepperdine tennis team looked strong on the opening day of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. With two rounds of singles in the books, five different student-athletes are still left in the singles draw, while Michaela Capannolo and Yuki Chiang won the Waves’ lone doubles match of the day.

Five players, including Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo), Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS), Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) and Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) received first-round byes, and all five won in their respective second-round matches.

Guillermo, seeded fourth in the draw, defeated Long Beach State’s Maeva Razakasoa in straight sets. Cutura followed suit, winning 6-3, 6-1 against Xenia Suworowa of Hawaii.

Granillo stormed off to a 6-0 start versus UC Irvine’s Ali Facey before the Anteater won set two 6-4 to force a third. The Wave got back on track and advanced after winning the final frame 6-2.

Freshman Chiang was dominant in her only singles match of the day, giving up just one game to Idil Haciraifoglu of West Coast Conference rival San Diego. Feneridis was the final Pepperdine player to advance to the round of 32, knocking out Kelsey Daguio of Hawaii 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, the pair of Capannolo and Chiang advanced after posting an 8-2 decision in their first-ever match together. The other Wave duos of Guillermo-Runglerkriangkrai and Cutura-Granillo were granted a first round bye and will begin doubles play tomorrow.

Although Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) posted the “W” in the round of 128, both suffered losses to ranked players in the round of 64.
