Issara and Guillermo Reach Riviera/ITA All-American Championship Consolation Finals

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – After suffering an early loss in the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team have redeemed themselves in the consolation draw. With three-straight wins – all against ranked opponents – the Waves’ top duo advances to Sunday’s consolation finals.
Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), ranked #7 in the ITA preseason doubles rankings, opened the back draw with an 8-6 triumph over #31-ranked Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd of Memphis.
Stanford’s Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay of Stanford, ranked #9, awaited the Waves in the quarterfinals. Issara and Guillermo dispatched the Cardinal duo 8-2.
In the semifinals Issara and Guillermo continued to dominate and won 8-2 against Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting, who are listed at #3 in the preseason rankings and are the Golden Bear’s top returning tandem.
Although it is the consolation bracket, made up of doubles teams who suffered first-round losses in the main draw, a coveted prize is up for grabs for tomorrow’s winner. The consolation championship doubles pair will get the automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. next month
Of the eight seeded doubles teams in the main draw, five lost their first match of the tournament to make their to the consolation bracket. Of the three teams who advanced to the second round, only top-seeded Sabrina Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian of USC remain. The Trojans compete in the main draw finals tomorrow against #19 Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar of Duke.
