Guillermo Looks to Consolation Rounds at Riviera/ITA All-American Championship
Oct. 3, 2013
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team fell in a tough three-set battle to a formidable opponent to make her exit from the singles main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. She will look to rebound tomorrow, when she picks up action in the consolation bracket.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), with the momentum of three wins in qualifying on Tuesday and Wednesday, nearly pulled off an incredible upset against #5-ranked Annett Schutting of Cal. Although Schutting won the first set decisively, Guillermo got back on track with a 7-5 win in set two.
The third set proved to be an evenly matched battle, but ultimately Schutting was able to earn a break and won 6-4.
“Lorraine made a poor start today, but was able to get going as the match went on,” said head coach Gualberto Escudero. “She made a good start in the third set, but just couldn’t capitalize at the end.
“Overall, she is playing at a high level. It’s early in the season and she just needs more experience closing out matches. I look forward to seeing how she responds tomorrow.”
In consolation, Guillermo will face #23 Hanna Mar of Duke. Match time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
Guillermo is no stranger to success in the consolation bracket. Last season, she and now graduated Khunpak Issara won the doubles back draw at the Riviera/ITA Championships. Their reward was an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship, where they reached the semifinals.
