Oct. 1, 2013
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – After two days of prequalifying match play over the weekend, action resumed at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship with the opening rounds of qualifying today. Lorraine Guillermo and Ale Granillo of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team both advanced after winning on Tuesday afternoon at the Riviera Country Club.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) moved on to round two with a narrow 7-6, 6-4 triumph over Stanford’s Carol Zhao.
The junior will face Lily Kimbell, one of eight winners to emerge out of the prequalifying bracket, on Wednesday.
Guillermo was also victorious on the doubles court along with partner Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo). Although the pair has not played with one another in competition since the fall of 2011, their reunion was a successful one.
The Wave duo upset #34-ranked Emily Flickinger and Pleun Burgmans of Auburn, 8-6.
Two more rounds of doubles await Guillermo and Granillo tomorrow, starting with Annie Mulholland and Ester Goldfeld. The Duke duo upset the No. 5 seed out of California in their first-round match.
Granillo also competed in the singles qualifying draw but was unable to advance.
Qualifying for singles and doubles concludes tomorrow with two more rounds. The eight winners out of the singles draw and four pairs out of the doubles bracket will earn a spot in the main draw, which opens on Thursday and concludes on Saturday.
