Guillermo Wins Singles Crown at SDSU Fall Classic
Sept. 30, 2012 Complete SDSU Fall Classic Brackets SAN DIEGO – Lorraine Guillermo won the singles red bracket at the San Diego State Fall Classic on Sunday, in the Pepperdine women’s tennis team’s first tournament of the 2012-13 season. Guillermo went a perfect 3-0 to take the title. Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) made her season debut on Friday with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over San Diego’s Laura Claus. The following day the sophomore downed Kseniya Barbabush of North Texas in straight sets. In Sunday’s final, Guillermo suffered a 6-3 setback to the Torero’s Stephanie Hoffpauir, but rebounded and won frames two and three, 6-2, 6-1. This was the first time Guillermo has won a singles bracket in fall tournament action. Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and Tara Panu (Los Altos Hills, Calif./The Harker School) were also in action at the Aztec Tennis Center over the weekend. Moore, competing in the gold bracket, opened the tournament with a three-set triumph against Ros-Polly Nguyen of New Mexico State. Although the junior lost in the second round, she got back on track today with a 6-1, 6-3 win over North Texas’ Dane Joubert. Panu went a combined 1-2 in singles over the weekend, and defeated Lorraine Cheung from nearby Cal State Northridge, 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation round. In doubles, Moore and Guillermo teamed up to beat Annemieke Witte and Mia Brandt of New Mexico State, 8-4. Guillermo looks to continue her early success on Thursday, Oct. 4, when she competes in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships doubles main draw. Guillermo and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School), who reached the NCAA Doubles Championship quarterfinals in 2012, play for the first time since May on Thursday. Issara, as well as Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hildalgo) battle in singles qualifying starting tomorrow, Oct. 1 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
