Waves Open Action at SDSU Fall Classic

SAN DIEGO – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team opened action at the SDSU Fall Classic today, with many members of the squad making their season debut. Amongst today’s winners were Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai, Yuki Chiang and Michaela Capannolo.
Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) represented the Waves in the Red Singles Draw. In her first appearance of the season, the freshman defeated Laura Antonana Iriarte – the Aztec’s No. 3 singles player during the 2013 dual season - 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Also in the Red Draw was Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS), who faced LMU’s Jessica Perez. The Wave, who was 3-1 entering into this weekend, emerged with a straight-set victory.
Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) earned the third win of the day for Pepperdine. The sophomore, battling in the Black Singles Draw, shut out San Diego State’s Kristin Buth, 6-0, 6-0.
Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS), Pattaraporn Salirathavibhaga (Bangkok, Thailand/International School Bangkok) and Miquela Newhart (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) all suffered losses today but will seek redemption in consolation tomorrow. It was the first match of the year for Salirathavibhaga and Newhart.
The women’s tennis team continues the SDSU Fall Classic on Saturday. Additionally, Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) begins the Rivieria/ITA All-American Championship in the prequalification singles draw tomorrow on the campus of UCLA.
