Guillermo Reaches Semifinals at Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
Sept. 14, 2013
MIDLAND, Texas – Day two of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational was another successful one for the Pepperdine women’s tennis team. After four different Waves reached the round of 16 in the singles draw, junior Lorraine Guillermo emerged with a pair of wins today to advance to the semifinal round.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), who is seeded third in the draw, opened the day with a narrow 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Baylor’s Kiah Generette. She followed that up with a straight-set victory against Jessica Kahts of Texas State.
The top four seeds all advanced to the semifinals. Guillermo will go up against No. 2 seed and #21-ranked Natalie Beazant of Rice tomorrow. On the other half of the bracket, top-seeded Samantha Vickers (Tulsa) is slated to face No. 4 seed Stefanie Tan (TCU).
Of the four Pepperdine players to reach the round of 16, three moved on to the quarterfinals. Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) downed Makenzie Craft, 6-1, 6-3 before falling victim to Beazant.
Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) also won her first match of the day, grinding out a 6-4, 6-4 win against Rongrong Leenabanchong. She put up a strong fight versus Tan, losing the first frame 7-5 before rallying for a 6-0 shutout in set two, but Cutura ultimately fell short in the third set tiebreaker.
Both doubles pairings, Guillermo-Chiang and Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College)-Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) suffered narrow 8-7 losses to make their exits.
The Waves conclude action at the season-opening Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Sunday.
