Women's Tennis Off to Strong Start at Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
Sept. 13, 2013
MIDLAND, Texas – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team got the 2013-14 season started in a big way, posting nine total victories on the opening day of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. The Waves were particularly dominant in singles play, with four of the five student-athletes competing in the draw advancing to the round of 16.
“Of course I am elated that four of the five girls made it through the first two rounds,” said head coach Gualberto Escudero. “There were some nail biters in the tiebreakers, but they all responded well and remained focused under pressure.
“So far we have had a great time. It’s a wonderful atmosphere here and the host families are fantastic.”
Players and coaches from all schools competing at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational are housed by members of the club.
Both Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) got their fall seasons off to an arguably perfect start, posting 6-0, 6-0 wins in their respective first-round matches.
Guillermo followed up her shut-out victory in the round of 64 with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Kimberly Anicete of Rice.
Although Cutura split sets with Kansas’ Maria Jose Cardona, the sophomore bounced back in the 10-point tiebreaker to move onto the round of 16.
Chiang found herself in a similar situation, but rebounded nicely from an 0-6 loss in set two to defeat #103-ranked Simona Parajova in three sets. It was the freshman’s first win of the season over a ranked opponent.
Capannolo was the fourth Wave to advance to the round of 16, and is set to face #15 Samantha Vickers – the tournament’s top seed – on Saturday.
Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS), who lost in singles today, found redemption in doubles, teaming up with Capannolo for the “W” versus Monica Pieratt and Berneice Van den Bergh of Texas State.
The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational continues tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.
