Capannolo, Chiang Exit NCAA Doubles Championship
May 23, 2014
ATHENS, Ga. – After walking away with a come-from-behind upset victory yesterday to open the NCAA Doubles Championship, Michaela Capannolo and Yuki Chiang of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team were unable to replicate the magic on the court today in the round of 16. The Wave duo fell to #5-ranked Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar of Duke in straight sets.
#78-ranked Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS), by far the lowest ranked pair in the 32-team championship draw, turned heads with a thrilling first round win to eliminate #30 Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright from the competition on Thursday.
The Waves were down 6-4, 4-1 before storming back to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. It was just their second win over a ranked opponent this season.
In today’s round of 16, Capannolo and Chiang were faced with fifth-seeded Capra and Mar. The Blue Devils’ top tandem entered the contest with an impressive 21-6 record, which included nine wins over ranked opponents.
The competition was fierce in the opening set. Just one break of serve decided the frame, as Capra and Mar edged the Waves 6-4 to take the early lead.
Capannolo and Chiang finally broke Duke’s serve early in set two, but Capra and Mar got back on serve to knot the score at 3-3. The Blue Devils only gained momentum from there and put away a 6-3 decision to secure the match.
The Waves’ No. 2 doubles team finishes the year with a 17-8 record together. Capannolo and Chiang will return for their junior and sophomore seasons, respectively, this fall.
