Issara and Guillermo Dominate in Opening Round of NCAA Doubles Championship
May 23, 2013
URBANA, Ill. – Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team opened the 2013 NCAA Doubles Championship with a convincing straight-set win today in the first round at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. The duo is just one win away from gaining ITA All-American status after doing so last season at the 2012 doubles championship.
Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) went up against Virginia’s Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi. Although the Waves were favored to win and ranked higher, #17 compared to #32, the Cavaliers had won in the prior meeting last fall at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships.
After an incredible run that included winning the back draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Issara and Guillermo’s streak was put to an end in the semifinals of the national indoor tournament by Nauta and Xi, 7-5, 6-2.
That would not be the case in today’s rematch. The Wave tandem put away a 6-2 triumph in the opening frame before riding an early break of serve to a 6-1 win in the second.
It was Issara and Guillermo’s 12th consecutive win but first in over a month after a change in the doubles lineup placed them with different teammates.
Pepperdine continues the doubles championship tomorrow, May 24, in the round of 16 versus #5 Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely of Tennessee. For live stats and video, visit the NCAA Tournament Central or follow the women’s tennis team on Twitter @PeppWTEN.
The Wave pair reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Doubles Championship after opening the event with back-to-back wins, and thus achieved All-American status. A team earns All-American honors one of three ways: Being a top-eight seed in the NCAA Doubles Championship, reaching the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, or finishing in the top-10 in final the ITA rankings.
