PALO ALTO, Calif. – Despite winning the doubles point, the #53 Pepperdine women’s tennis team could not overcome #22 Rice’s deep singles lineup and succumbed to a 4-3 loss in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Waves, the 2013 West Coast Conference Tournament champions, conclude the dual season with a 12-12 record.

The Waves claimed the opening advantage after winning a hard and closely fought doubles point. Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) put Pepperdine on the board with an 8-3 triumph over Danny Trigo and Solo Zinko.

After falling behind, reigning WCC Doubles Team of the Month Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) fought back to win 8-6 and send the Waves into singles with a 1-0 lead.

The Owls, now 21-4 on the season, knotted the score up after #41-ranked Natalie Bezant got the better of #32 Guillermo in a straight set decision. Rice took the lead when Kate Gater posted a 6-2, 6-2 win on court four.

Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) fired back for the Waves, downing Liat Zimmermann by a score of 6-3, 7-5.

Although Rice regained the lead with a win on court six, #76 Issara continued her season of dominance and topped #61 Dominique Harmath in three sets. Issara ends her Pepperdine singles career on an 18 match win streak and an overall 2013 dual season record of 21-2. Her winning percentage of .913 ranks fourth all-time in Pepperdine’s single-season record book, while her win tally of 21 ties the senior for ninth.

With the team score tied at three, attention turned to court five where Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) was down 2-5 in the third set versus Kimberly Anicete. Although the freshman was able to get a game back, Anicete won the next to clinch the dual for the Owls.

Issara and Guillermo continue on for Pepperdine in the NCAA Doubles Championship, beginning on May 22 in Urbana, Ill. at the Khan Tennis Complex. Guillermo will also compete in the 64-person singles bracket.
